Bihars Priority in India Bangladesh Ganga Water Treaty: Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary has raised concerns over the renewal of the India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Treaty.

He stressed that Bihar’s water requirements must receive priority in any future agreement.

Choudhary clarified that Bihar does not oppose sharing Ganga water with Bangladesh.

However, he wants the agreement to protect the state’s interests and ensure adequate water for its people.

The Chief Minister highlighted a major concern with the existing arrangement.

According to him, Bihar mainly gets the opportunity to use Ganga water between July and October.

This creates challenges for the state during the remaining months.

He pointed out that agriculture, drinking water supply and industrial activities require water throughout the year.

Bihar cannot depend on seasonal water availability to meet these essential needs.

1996 Treaty Renewal Raises Concerns

The 1996 India-Bangladesh Ganga Water Treaty is due to expire in December 2026.

Its renewal has gained importance as both countries prepare to discuss the future framework for sharing the river’s water.

Choudhary wants the Centre to consider Bihar’s requirements during these discussions.

He believes the revised arrangement should ensure a more balanced distribution of water.

The issue holds particular importance for Bihar’s farmers.

Agriculture remains heavily dependent on reliable water resources.

Adequate water availability can also support drinking water infrastructure and industrial growth.

CM Seeks Four-Lane Roads Along Both Banks of Ganga

During his interaction with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Choudhary also raised an infrastructure demand.

He urged the Union Minister to develop four-lane roads along both banks of the Ganga in Bihar.

The proposed roads could improve connectivity between different parts of the state.

They could also support trade, transportation and regional economic development.

Bihar Pushes its Interests in National Policy

Choudhary’s remarks reflect Bihar’s growing focus on protecting its interests in major national and international decisions.

The Ganga serves as a crucial lifeline for Bihar.

Its water supports agriculture, households, industries and several economic activities.

As the treaty renewal approaches, Bihar wants its concerns to feature prominently in India’s negotiations with Bangladesh.
