DSPMU Ranchi Protest: Several student and political organisations staged a joint protest at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU) in Ranchi.

They opposed an attempt to erase the name of legendary tribal freedom fighter Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat from the university’s main gate.

The protest followed an incident on the Thursday’s night.

Various tribal and student organisations had inscribed Veer Budhu Bhagat’s name on the university’s main gate that day.

However, unidentified persons allegedly tried to erase the name and covered it with soil.

The incident sparked anger among student groups.

In response, representatives and activists from Congressna Party Jharkhand, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) Jharkhand, NSUI, Youth Congress, AISA, AISF and the Adivasi Students Union gathered at the university.

The organisations jointly condemned the incident.

They also re-inscribed Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat’s name on the main gate to reaffirm their demand and honour his legacy.

Demand to Rename the University

Ranchi College changed its name to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University in 2017.

In 2025, a proposal to rename the university after tribal freedom fighter Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat reached the state cabinet.

Student groups and several social organisations have consistently supported this demand.

They believe the university should honour a freedom fighter who played a significant role in the region’s history.

Organisations Defend Tribal Identity and Heritage

The protesting organisations described Veer Budhu Bhagat as a symbol of Jharkhand’s struggle for Jal, Jungle and Zameen (water, forests and land).

They also highlighted his contribution to tribal self-respect and resistance against exploitation.

According to the organisations, attempts to erase his name go beyond a dispute over university signage.

They undermine Jharkhand’s history, tribal identity and the legacy of its freedom fighters.

The groups reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the honour of Jharkhand’s revolutionary leaders.

They also reiterated their demand to rename DSPMU after Shaheed Veer Budhu Bhagat.

The organisations declared that their movement would continue until the state recognises the historical contribution of the tribal freedom fighter.
