Protest Against SIR in Ranchi: Students, youth organisations, women’s groups and trade unions staged a protest march in Ranchi on Friday against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar and action against him.

The protest march began at the gate of Ranchi University and proceeded to Albert Ekka Chowk, bringing together members of several organisations opposed to the ongoing voter-list revision exercise.

Organisations participating in the demonstration included the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), Jharkhand Rajya Kisan Sabha, All India Students Association (AISA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) (SUCI).

Protesters Raise Concerns Over Voter Exclusions

The demonstrators alleged that eligible voters could be excluded from electoral rolls during the SIR process.

They also raised concerns about a lack of transparency in the procedures for filing claims and objections.

The protesters demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar from office and called for action against him over their concerns regarding the electoral roll revision exercise.

The issue has triggered opposition from various political and civil society groups, with critics questioning whether the process adequately safeguards the voting rights of eligible citizens.

However, the allegations raised by the protesters remain their claims and should be distinguished from independently established findings.

Several Organisations Join the Demonstration

The participation of student bodies, farmers organisations, trade unions and women’s groups highlighted the broad range of groups involved in the protest.

Organisers also claimed that similar demonstrations had taken place in other districts, indicating that opposition to the SIR exercise extends beyond the state capital.

The march in Ranchi reflects growing public debate over electoral roll verification, voter inclusion and the transparency of election-related procedures.

SIR Becomes a Political Flashpoint in Jharkhand

The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has emerged as a contentious political issue in Jharkhand.

The Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and other groups have previously raised questions about the process.

At the centre of the debate are concerns about protecting eligible voters from wrongful exclusion while ensuring that electoral rolls remain accurate and up to date.

The Election Commission’s procedures for verification, claims and objections are crucial to addressing such concerns and maintaining public confidence in the electoral system.

As protests and political criticism continue, the manner in which voter grievances are addressed could become an important issue in Jharkhand’s political discourse.
