Cristiano Ronaldo retirement: Cristiano Ronaldo, one of football’s greatest icons, has announced his retirement from international football.
The 41-year-old Portuguese superstar brings an extraordinary 23-year journey with his national team to an end.
Ronaldo shared the emotional announcement through a video message on social media on Thursday.
He confirmed that he would hand back Portugal’s iconic No. 7 shirt after the November international break.
“The day has come for me to hand back the No. 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said.
He described the decision as deeply emotional.
He also thanked Portuguese supporters for their unwavering support throughout his international career.
A Remarkable 23-Year International Journey
Ronaldo made his international debut for Portugal in August 2003.
He quickly established himself as one of the country’s most influential footballers.
Over the next 23 years, he delivered extraordinary performances across major international tournaments.
He made 234 appearances for Portugal and scored a record 146 international goals.
Both achievements stand as men’s international football records.
His career also included six FIFA World Cup appearances.
He scored at every edition, from Germany 2006 to the 2026 tournament.
Euro 2016 Remains a Historic Achievement
One of Ronaldo’s greatest achievements came at UEFA Euro 2016.
He captained Portugal to their first major international trophy.
Portugal defeated France 1-0 in the final after extra time.
Although an injury forced him to leave the final early, Ronaldo continued to inspire his teammates from the sidelines.
He later added two UEFA Nations League titles to his collection.
Portugal lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2025.
What Comes Next for Ronaldo?
Ronaldo’s announcement concerns international football only.
He will continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr.
His retirement marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Portuguese football history.
For millions of fans, Ronaldo represents much more than goals and trophies.
His determination, discipline and extraordinary longevity have inspired generations.
Portugal will now look towards a new generation of footballers.
However, replacing the influence of its legendary No. 7 will remain a massive challenge.
Ronaldo may have decided to leave international football, but his legacy will continue to inspire the beautiful game for years to come.
