INDIA Bloc Protest Against CeC: The INDIA opposition bloc will hold a symbolic ‘People’s Impeachment’ protest against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) today.
The programme will take place at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi announced the revised schedule after heavy rain forced the opposition to postpone the event planned for October 30.
The protest aims to highlight the opposition’s concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Opposition parties have accused the Election Commission of removing large numbers of legitimate voters from electoral lists during the exercise.
Opposition Questions Electoral Roll Revision
The INDIA bloc has raised serious concerns about the impact of SIR on voters.
Opposition leaders claim that the revision process could deprive eligible citizens of their voting rights.
They argue that the removal of genuine voters threatens the fairness and transparency of elections.
The opposition also wants greater accountability from the Election Commission.
The Election Commission, however, maintains that SIR aims to clean up electoral rolls.
The exercise identifies voters who have died, shifted residences, remained absent or registered more than once.
The poll body considers these steps necessary to maintain accurate and updated voter lists.
A Political Protest, Not a Constitutional Impeachment
The opposition has described the event as a symbolic public impeachment to express its dissatisfaction with the Chief Election Commissioner.
However, the programme does not constitute a formal impeachment under the Constitution.
It represents a political protest and a public expression of opposition parties concerns.
The event could intensify the political confrontation between the INDIA bloc and the Election Commission over electoral transparency.
